Gold buys cosmetics: furniture, wearables, island themes. That is the only thing it is for.
Shells and Marks are earned by playing and cannot be bought. Nothing converts between them and Gold, in either direction.
Nothing you do in the game produces Gold or $OTI. Fishing is a nice way to spend an afternoon, not paid work.
Premium items never change fishing odds, gathering, tools, progression, or where an island stands in the Atlas.
